Is a deep water port necessary?

Considering recommendations presented in the Study on port development in Lithuania conducted by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in 2004, a deep water port is planned at Melnragė, within 350 metres distance from the shore.
A 1,5 km-long and 700 m-wide artificial island shall be formed in the sea. It shall be connected with currently operating port by railway and road network.

Deep water port is important not only to Klaipėda Region, but also to entire Lithuania: it will attract more freights and value-added services, increase both the competitiveness of Klaipėda port and the region.
