On 26 January 2010 the First Deputy Harbour Master – Head of Vessel Traffic Service Adomas Alekna attended an inter-departmental meeting regarding issues of regulation of sulphur content of marine fuels, which was held in the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania. In October 2008, International Maritime Organization (IMO) reviewed the International Convention on prevention of pollution from ships (MARPOL convention) and passed requirements that, as of the beginning 2015, the ships navigating in the Baltic and North seas as well as English Channel use marine fuels with sulphur content not exceeding 0,1 %. In addition, a requirement of the European Union for the ships moored at the ports of the Community to use fuel with sulphur content not exceeding 0,1 % came into force as of the beginning of January 2010. On 26 January 2010 the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania initiated a inter-departmental meeting, intending to draw attention to discussions conditioned by the aforesaid decisions and problems of sulphur content of the fuels, to analyze the present regulation and its possible effect on transport sector, as well as to hear arguments and recommendations which could serve as a basis for formation of Lithuania’s position on further actions in the context of regulation of the aforementioned sulphur content of marine fuels.
