On the occasion of European Maritime Day, an international conference “Development of maritime city identity: experiences and prospects“ organized by the Klaipėda City Municipality and Maritime Culture Coordinating Board together with Lithuanian Maritime Museum and Lithuania Minor History Museum was held on 20-21 May 2010 in LCC International University (Kretingos str. 36, Klaipėda) and was attended by the representatives of the Seaport Authority. Aim of the conference – actualize the significance of Klaipėda as Lithuania‘s port city and form the identity of Lithuania as a maritime city. In this context, it was very important to present the experiences of Western Europe and especially Baltic Region and to understand the place and significance of Lithuania as a maritime country in the environment of the Baltic region. The main tasks of the conference were to draw Lithuanian society‘s attention to the uniqueness of our country – the sea and the port, to contribute to the development of maritime culture in our country, to share the experience on development of coastal and maritime culture and formation of maritime identity with other European seaports and to encourage cooperation of Klaipėda maritime organizations.
