Development plans

Klaipėda port is rapidly developing and sets out ambitious plans for further expansion

Having proven its competitive advantages and having gained the leading position among the major Eastern Baltic ports, Klaipėda port sets ambitious plans for further development and boldly meets challenges of the new century.

RailwayConstruction and improvement of approach railways and roads
One of the key factors determining successful operation of the port is having a well-developed network of approach railways and roads ensuring fast and smooth transportation of cargo to and from the port terminals.
78% of all handled cargo is delivered to/from Klaipėda port by railways, therefore railway transport, which in comparison to road transport is more environmentally-friendly, faster and cheaper, is particularly important. Building new railways not only allows for faster transportation of cargo, but also solves issues related to traffic jams, pollution, and noise as well as reduces traffic volume in the city.
Klaipėda port is serviced by four railway stations: Klaipėda, Perkėla, Pauostis and Draugystė. The latter two are subject to complete renovation in 2011-2012.  These renovations will extend their sorting and maneuvering roads, build additional approaches to the port and implement a centralized road control system, which will significantly shorten the delivery time of wagons to port terminals.

The development of approach roads is also rapidly progressing. Construction of the Northern Access Road to terminals located in the northern part of the port was finished in 2008.
Another important project is the Southern Access Road. In 2009-2010 the access roads to the intermodal cargo terminals located in the southern part of the port were reconstructed. A few years later a new section of the Southern Access Road   bypassing Klaipėda city is to be constructed; the road will have 4 lanes and will meet performance requirements for increased traffic volume.

The reconstruction of the historical Central Access Road is important due to its close vicinity to city residential districts. In order to optimize traffic flow, 2-level interchanges are to be constructed on Baltijos ave., laying a section of the road in the tunnel.

Establishment of Klaipėda Logistics Centre
Striving to ensure continuous increase of cargo in the port as well as expand the value and range of customer services, additional cargo-related services such as storage, packaging, sorting, and marking must be developed. To achieve these objectives, construction of the Klaipėda Logistics Centre is planned, which will be a major multimodal transport hub combining various modes of transportation.
Modern and large the Klaipėda Logistics Centre, comprising up to 336 ha total land area (carrying out the construction stage by stage) will be built in the southern part of Klaipėda, just beside the port. Financing for the Logistics Centre infrastructure – storage grounds, roads and railroads – is provided by the state budget and the EU Structural Funds, while terminals and warehouses will be established by private companies that will operate in the Logistics Centre. Klaipėda Logistics Centre commences operation in 2013.

Construction of a marina for small crafts and pleasure boats
Every port has to ensure safe and appropriate places for mooring and navigating yachts, cutters, boats and other small marine crafts. Therefore, constructing a marina for small crafts and pleasure boats is an important step aimed at implementing this task.
The new marina will be built on an especially convenient port site, the southern part, further from the current navigation channel. Thus, small crafts entering the Curonian Lagoon will not have to cross heavy ship traffic and the ferry-turning circle. The spacious marina will accommodate up to 690 boats (430 at the marina and 260 onshore, in slipways).  This will also be an object of significant importance to the public since a yachting school is to be established there.
The estimated completion time for the marina is the year 2013; the project will be financed from the EU Structural Funds.

SventojiRebuilding Šventoji port
Šventoji is a cozy resort town; an old fishing settlement located just 35 km from Klaipėda.
The port in Šventoji had been operating up to the 18th century successfully competing with other contemporary ports on the Baltic Sea. However, current conditions of the port require major reconstruction. Rebuilding the port will accommodate small pleasure boats and yachts, which will facilitate tourism development in Šventoji. The port will also serve local fishermen. There will be quays for rescue vessels, oil spillage containment, fire-fighting, marine environment, fish breeding vessels as well Border Control authorities in the port.
In 2008 the Ministry of Transport and Communication of the Republic of Lithuania developed and approved the action plan for implementing Šventoji port construction.  Technical design documents are in progress in the year 2012, and in 2013–2014 port construction will be carried out. The majority of preparatory work, technical design documents, infrastructure, piers, dredging, reconstruction and construction of quays will be financed from EU Structural Funds. More
