Cargo handling in Klaipėda Port in January – February of 2010

In January – February of 2010 Klaipėda Port handled 4,82 million tons of marine cargo, i.e. more by 12,2 % or by 523,0 thousand tons than during the corresponding  period of 2009.

The increase of cargo in terms of a turnover in the period  of the first months of this year comparing with the corresponding period  of 2009 was reached due to the handling of natural and chemical fertilizers (+591,2 thousand tons) and intermodal cargo, i.e. Ro – Ro container units ( in terms of tonnage 158,4 thousand tons and  +134,6 thousand tons respectively).
The increase of intermodal cargo turnover that has been lasting already for the second month is a particular factor as it demonstrates the growth of general consumption and the development of economics.

Cargo handling in Klaipėda Port in February of 2010 increased by 10,1 percent if to compare with February of 2009 and made  2,29 million tons.

The growth tendency in dry and bulk cargo turnover - by 29,5 percent -  has been observed during the last winter month of 2010. The handling of general cargo increased by 25,6 percent. Liquid cargo handling dropped down by 17,5 percent if to compare with February of 2009.
The comparison of handled dry and bulk cargo nomenclatures in February of 2010 and 2009 revealed the increase in the turnover of fertilizers ( +282,9 thousand tons,  612,9 thousand tons were handled, the change is +85,8 percent),  sugar raw (+16,6 thousand tons, 61,7 thousand tons were handled, the change is +37,0 percent), peat ( +12,8 thousand tons, 43,4 thousand tons were handled, the change is +41,8 percent), mining products and construction materials (+3,0 thousand tons, 65,7 thousand tons were handled, the change is +4,7 percent). The handling of agriculture   products ( -90,2 thousand tons, 88,9 thousand  tons were handled, the change is -50,4 percent) and metal scrap ( -25,7 thousand tons, 5,7 thousand tons were handled, the change is -81,7 percent) dropped down if to compare with February of 2009.
In general cargo nomenclature the growth of  Ro – Ro cargo (+76,1 thousand tons, 301,6 thousand tons were handled, the change is +33,7 percent) and container cargo ( +72,5 thousand tons, 275,9 thousand tons were handled, the change is +35,6 percent)  was observed in February of 2010. The timber handling (+4,1 thousand tons, 43,3 thousand tons were handled, the change is +10,4 percent) and the turnover of fertilize handling (+4,1 thousand tons, 43,3 thousand tons were handled, the change is  +10,4 percent) increased as well. The handling of refrigerated products was less by 3,3 thousand tons or by 6,8 percent if to compare with February of 2009.
The decrease of liquid cargo handling in February of 2010 was affected by the reduced turnover of oil products – 583,4 thousand tons were handled, i.e. less by 143,7 thousand tons or by 19,8 percent than in February of the previous year. The increased handling of liquid fertilizers ( +4,1 thousand tons, 62,4 thousand tons were handled, the change is +7,1 percent) and molasses (totally 2,9 thousand tons were handled and in February of 2009 this product was not handled at all) was recorded in February of the current year.
14.313 units of Ro-Ro cargo, i.e. more by 2.844 units than during the corresponding period of 2009, were handled during the second month of the current year. Container handling calculated in TEU increased by 0,9 percent up to 20.3208 TEU, the growth is 175 TEU.
12,5 thousand passengers called Klaipeda Port in February of 2010, i.e. more by 19,3 percent than durong the corresponding period of 2009.
Cargo handling in Butingės terminal dropped down by 12,3 percent comparing with February of 2009 and made 702,5 thousand tons.
