Review of cargo turnover results at the Klaipėda port and other ports of Eastern Baltic
Cargo handling results at the port of Klaipėda continue to grow. During the eight months of this year the port already handled 20 million tons of marine cargo. If the turnover of the port keeps growing at the same rate, it is likely that the annual turnover of the port of Klaipėda will reach around 30 million tons.
According to the cargo turnover at the Baltic ports, the Klaipėda port continues to outpace the neighbouring ports of Riga and Ventspils, and is only second to the Joint Port of Tallinn.
The largest growth of handling figures during the eight months of this year, in comparison to the corresponding period of 2009, was reached due to increased handling figures of natural and chemical fertilizers (+1 457,9 thous.tons), ro-ro cargo (+731,0 thous.tons), containerized cargo (+535,7 thous.tons), minerals and building materials (+296,9 thous.tons).
According to the cargo types, the largest growth (29,8 %) was recorded  in handling of general cargo - 6 281,4 thous.tons (31,3 % of total turnover of the port) handled. Turnover of dry and bulk cargo increased by 29,3 %, cargo volumes of this cargo type reached 7 548,4 thous.tons (37,7 %). Handling figures of liquid cargo decreased by -13,7 %, in total 6 181,5 thous.tons (30,8 %) were handled.
During the January-July of 2010, 4 185 ships called at the port of Klaipėda, i.e. by -11,1 % or by -523 ships less than during the same period of the last year. During the analyzed period,  236,1 thous. passengers visited the port, i.e. by 20,0 % more that during the corresponding period of 2009.
The port of Klaipėda remains the leader according to handling figures of containerized cargo. During January-August of this year, 187 953 TEU of cargo was handled, i.e. by 15,8 % more than during the corresponding period of the last year (growth - 25 652 TEU).
In September of this year, the Klaipėda port closes the cruise shipping season. During the analyzed period, the Klaipėda port was visited by 32,5 thous. cruise passengers, i.e.  by 18,2 % more than during the corresponding period of 2009. It is possible that during this cruise ship season (which will end in September), the port of Klaipėda will reach the anticipated number of cruise passengers - 36,0 thous.
