Review of cargo handling in Klaipėda and others eastern Baltic sea ports
Throughout two month of this year Klaipėda Port handled 6,13 million tons of sea born cargo, the overall cargo handling increase reached even 24,7 % if to compare with the corresponding period of the previous year.
According to cargo handling turnover in Easter Coast Baltic Ports in January – February of 2011 Klaipėda Port handled the largest cargo volumes and left behind not only neighbouring Riga and Ventspils Ports but already for the second month of this year has been ahead even the Joint Port of Tallinn. The common cargo handling results of Klaipėda Port and Būtingė Terminal made 7,63 million tons in January – February of 2011.
The highest increase in cargo turnover during two month of this year comparing with the corresponding period of 2010 was reached due to increased handling volumes of bulk natural and chemical fertilizers (+481,2 thousand tons), oil products (+348,4 thousand tons), Ro – Ro cargo (+204,4 thousand tons), liquid natural and chemical fertilizers (+72,9 thousand tons) and containerized cargo (+61,3 thousand tons).
In terms of cargo groups the handling volumes of dry and bulk cargo were handling turnover was 2 426,0 thousand tons (39,6 percent of overall port handling) increased mostly (23,7 percent). Liquefied cargo handling increased by 26,0 percent, volumes of this cargogroup were1 960,3 thousand tons (32,0 percent). The handling of general cargo increased by 24,8 percent, in total 1 742,9 thousand tons (28,4 percent) were handled.
In January–February of this year 1 038 ships. i.e. more by 6,4 percent or by 62 ships, comparing to the corresponding period of the previous year,called KlaipėdaPort.The number of passengerswas 36,0 thousand, i.e. more by 31,5 percent comparing with the corresponding period of 2010.
Klaipėda Port has further maintained its position of the leading Port in containerized cargo handling. 52 854 TEU, i.e. more by 31,7 percent comparing to the correspondingperiodof 2010 ( the increase made12 722 TEU) were handled in Klaipėda Port in January – February of 2011.
