REVIEW OF CARGO HANDLING IN KLAIPĖDA AND OTHER EASTERN COAST BALTIC SEA PORTS
January – December of 2011
With the seaborne totalling to 36,56 million tons Klaipėda Port’s cargo handling growth rate throughout twelve month of this year was even 17,0 % up comparing with the corresponding period of 2010.
According to cargo handling turnover in Baltic Ports in the period of January – December of 2011 Klaipeda Port again returned its leader’s position and according to aggregated annual results it was ahead the neighbouring Ports of Riga, Ventspils and the Joint Port of Tallinn (Muuga), Paldiskis, „Old City“, Sarema (Saaremaa), Paljesare (Paljessaare). The advantage of Klaipėda Port over the Joint Port of Tallin decreased even up to 123,7 thousand tons in January – December of 2011. The overall cargo handling of Klaipeda Port and Būtingė Terminal was 45,5 million tons in January – December of 2011 and exceeded the handling turnover of the Joint Port of Tallinn even by 8,8 million tons.
The highest increase in cargo turnover throughout the period of twelve month of this year comparing with the corresponding period of 2010 was reached due to increased handling volumes of bulk natural and chemical fertilizers (+2 088,8 thousand tons), liquid natural and chemical fertilizers (+799,0 thousand tons), containerized cargoes (+722,0 thousand tons), bulk iron ore (+616,9 thousand tons), Ro – Ro cargo (+608,6 thousand tons), and oil products (+376,3 thousand tons).
In terms of cargo groups the handling volumes of dry and bulk cargo with the handlingturnover totalling to 14 524,7 thousand tons (23,4 percent of overall Port handling turnover) increased at most(by 23,4 percent).). General cargo handlingvolumes accelerated by 13,8 percent, the handling volumes of this cargo group were 11 032,3 thousand tons (30,1 percent of overall Port handling turnover).
The handling turnover of liquefied cargo advanced by 12,5 percent to 11 033,8 thousand tons (30,2 percent of overall Port handling turnover.
7 063 vessels, including 4 192 cargo vessels (+200 vessels or +5,0 percent comparing with 2010), 36 cruise ships (-9 ships or -25 percent comparing with 2010), 2 835 other types of vessels (fishing ships, pleasure boats, special service ships) (-76 vessels or -2,6 percent comparing with 2010). Throughout the total period of the current year the number of vessels calling Klaipeda Port increased by 115 vessels or by 1,7 percent than throughout 2010.
The number of passengerscalling the Portthroughout the analysed periodwas 323 824, i.e. more by 0,9 percent or by 2 833 passengers comparing with the corresponding period of 2010.
Klaipėda Port has further maintained its position of the leading Port in containerized cargo handling in the region of the Baltic countries. 382 185 TEU, i.e. more by 29,5 percent comparing with the correspondingperiodof 2010 (the growth was 86 964 TEU) were handled in Klaipeda Port in January December of 2011.
