ACTIVITIES OF KLAIPĖDA AND NEIGHBOURING PORTS IN THE YEAR 2005

Port of Klaipėda
 
During the period of January- May 2005 1,68 million tones of cargo has been stevedored in the port of Klaipėda and it makes 20 percent more than during the corresponding period of the year 2004.
 
Increase has been registered in May 2005 as well as in April per all types of cargo, especially liquid cargo (35 percent more), as well as dry and bulk cargo handling (26 percent more). 3 percent more of general cargo has been stevedored in May.
 
General cargo handling has increased during first five months of the year.
9,19 million tons of cargo has been handled in the port of Klaipėda during the period starting from January till the end of May in 2005, what makes 3 percent more than during last year‘s corresponding period and it exceeds the results of the year 2003 when the record of the handling has been registered by 1,6 percent.
 
In May, if compared to the last year, increase of 44 percent of handling of oil products (587 thous. t)
and 1 percent of liquid fertilizers (102 thous. t) resulted in general increase of handled quantities. Total quantity of oil products which were handled during the period of January-May makes 2809 thous. tons (8 percent less then last year), liquid fertilizers 504 thous. tons or 27 percent more.
 
During the period of January- May 2005 handling of general cargo has increased by 8 percent, the containers making the portion of 87728 TEU or by 40 percent more than during the period of January- May 2004. Also significantly increased handling of iron and steel products (by 2,5 times more than during the corresponding period of the year 2004, 231 thous. T) and quickly putrescent products (79 percent more, 219 thous. t).
 
Because of increasing handled quantities of grain (7 times more, 253 thous. t), liquid fertilizers (5 percent more, 1106 thous. t), metal scrap (15 percent more, 307 thous.t), cement (10 percent more, 55 thous.t), total handling of dry and bulk cargo has increased by 7 percent during the period of January-May 2005 in comparison to the last year‘s corresponding period.
 
 More than 59120 passengers or two percent more than last year have been serviced at the port of Klaipėda during the period of January- May 2005 or 2 percent more than during corresponding period of the last year.
 
2,11 million tones of unrefined oil has been handled in the Būtingė Oil Terminal during the period of January- May 2005.
 
Container Stevedoring in the Baltic Ports, TEU
 
Increase in tones during May of 2005 was greater in the port of Klaipėda than in other ports of eastern Baltics. Cargo handling increased by 20 percent or by 277 thous. tones in May of 2005 if compared to the results of May in 2004. In the port of Tallin 3 percent less or 103 thous. tones less cargo has been handled during May of 2005 if compared to the results of May in 2004, in the port of Riga 80,5 thous. tons or 3,8 percent more, in the port of Ventspils 140 thous. tonų or 5,6 percent less, in Liepaja 53,5 thous. tons or 15 percent more.

20,65 million tons of cargo has been handled in the port of St.Pertersburg during the period starting from January till the end of May in 2005, what makes 18 percent more than during last year‘s corresponding period. Increase has been registered as per all list of main types of cargo, except for coal/ore (1311 thous. t) and grain (158 thous. t), correspondingly less by 6 and 54 percent
 
Metal cargo flows increased by 4 percent to 3,5 million tones, oil products up to 4,7 million t (36 percent more), timber (1,6 million t, 12 percent more), ref.cargo by 1,36 million t or 9 percent more.
 
In the port of Primorsk handling of unrefined oil increased by 43 percent and the quantity of 23,54 million t has been registered.
 
16,5 million tons of cargo has been handled in the port of Tallinn during the period starting from January till the end of May in 2005, what makes 1,5 percent more than during last year‘s corresponding period. The increase ensured following results of dry cargo handling (2,6 million t or 9,8 percent more), liquid (11,6 million t, 2,5 percent), and also Ro-Ro (1272 thous. t) and containers (correspondingly 9,9 and 6,2 percent more). 40 percent decrease has been registered for other general cargo. Transit cargo makes more than 85 percent of general cargo handling in Tallinn.
New free zone has been opened in the port of Muuga on 9 May 2005. Its area makes 215 hectares.
First container train has arrived from the port of Muuga to Moscow (station Moscow- Tovarnaja on 17 May. The organizers of the route are railways of Russia and Estonia.
 12,6 million tons of cargo has been handled in the port of Ventspils and it makes 0,4 percent more. Handling of raw oil decreased by 85 percent to 224 thous. t (in May of 2005 nothing has been handled) and Ro-Ro cargo handling to 98 thous.t (51 percent less). Increase has been registered in handling of oil products (11 percent, 7,46 million t), dry fertilizers (11 percent, 2,14 million t). Great increase in percents has been reached in handling of coal (1,85 million tone or 50 percent more).
 10,05 million tons of cargo has been handled in the port of Riga during the period starting from January till the end of May in 2005, what makes 3,2 percent more than during the last year. Coal makes more than 40 percent of the turnover of the port of Riga, its  handling increased by 12,5 percent to 4,08 million t. Increase has been observed in handling chemical material (42 percent more, 750 thous.t), Ro-Ro cargo (27 percent, 303 thous. t) from the main types of cargo as per cargo list.  5 percent less of containers has been stevedored as well as 9,4 percent less of timber (or 1,73 million t) and oil products (14,7 percent, 1,59 million t).
 6,71 million tons of cargo has been handled in the port of Kaliningrad during the period starting from January till the end of May in 2005, what makes 19 percent more than during the last year. Immense increase has been registered of container, heavy metal (31 perc., 1,02 million t) and oil products (16 perc., 3.95 million t) handling.
 
At present SC Kaliningrad Maritime Trade Port is reconstructing terminal for liquid products. Capacity of the newly reconstructed terminal would reach 1 million tones of oil per year. It is planned to start the operation of the terminal in the autumn of 2005 to export the oil to the ports of Northern Europe.
