ACTIVITIES OF KLAIPEDA AND NEIGHBOURING PORTS IN JANUARY AUGUST, 2005

1.9 million tons of cargo, i.e. by 20.7 % more in comparison with the same period last year was handled in the port of Klaipeda in September.
 
In total 15.85 million tons of cargo, i.e. by 5.5 % more in comparison with the respective period in 2004 was handled during nine months this year.
 
During nine months this year volumes of all the types of cargo increased, except liquid ones. Even 8 % decrease is observed as far as liquid cargo is concerned (5.2 million tons this year and 5.7 million tons – last year).
 
During January – September 156 757 TEU containers were handled. Volumes of this cargo increased by 27 %.
 
Handling of fertilizers increased by 25 % up to 3.2 million tons in the port of Klaipeda. While comparing this year cargo handling with the respective period last year, handling of liquid cargo increased by 22 %, bulk – by 24 % and packed – by 52 %.
 
In total during nine months this year handling of grain increased almost 5-fold (up to 412.8 thousand tons), iron and steel products – almost doubled (up to 344.6 thousand tons) and perishable products (up to 335.1 thousand tons).
 
During three quarters of the year services were provided to 192.8 thousand passengers, i.e. by 34 % more than in the same period last year (143.6 thousand passengers). This year Klaipeda port received 24.1 thousand cruise passengers, i.e. almost 70 % more than last year. This season cruise vessels called 60 times, i.e. by 25 % more than in the respective period last year.
 
During January – September 2005 Butinge SPM handled 4.2 million tons of crude oil.

Cargo handling during January – September in the port of Klaipeda is the highest among the Baltic ports.
 
During January – September 2005 the port of St Petersburg handled 42.8 million tons of cargo, i.e. by 15 % more than last year. As in previous months increase is recorded according to all types of cargo, except for coal (up to 2.5 million tons) and grain (up to 0.3 million tons), the decrease is by 7 and 41 % respectively. Handling of oil products amounts to 27.8 % from the total cargo handling, by 20 % more than last year (up to 11.9 million tons), handling of metal totals 16 %, during nine months this year the increase is by 1 % (up to 6.8 million tons), handling of chemical products – by 13 % respectively, the increase in handling amounts to 11 % (up to 5.4 million tons).
 
During January – September 42.6 million tons of crude oil were handled in the port of Primorsk, i.e. by 35 more.
 
During January – September 2005 the port of Tallinn handled 29.4 million tons, i.e. by 3 % more than in respective period in 2004. The growth was due to the increase in bulk (up to 5.4 million tons, i.e. by 24 more than last year) and liquid cargo (up to 19.9 million tons, i.e. by 1 % more) handling. Despite the fact that Ro-ro and container cargo tonnage increased by 7 % (2.3 million tons) and by 8 % (0.8 million tons) respectively, however, handling of general cargo decreased by 38 % (from 1.5 million tons in 2004 up to 0.9 million tons in 2005).
 
During January – September 2005 the port of Ventspils handled 22.3 million tons, i.e. by 2 % more than in the same period last year. According to cargo types, handling of liquid cargo decreased by 3 % (13.8 million tons this year and 14.2 million tons – last year), general cargo decreased by 23 % (0.6 million tons and 0.7 million tons respectively). Handling of dry and bulk cargo increased by 14 % in comparison with the last year figures. Handling of crude oil this year decreased from 2.1 million tons (2004) up to 0.2 million tons (2005). Handling of Ro-ro cargo decreased by 41 % up to 174 thousand tons. However, handling of oil products (by 13 % up to 12.9 million tons) and fertilizers (by 9 % up to 3.8 million tons) increased. The highest growth is registered in coal handling, up to 3.4 million tons, i.e. by 22 % more than last year.
 
18.3 million tons of cargo, i.e. by 2 more than last year was handled in the port of Riga during January – September 2005. As far as the types of cargo are concerned, handling of liquid cargo decreased (from 3.5 million tons in 2004 up to 2.6 million tons in 2005), general cargo (from 5.0 million tons in 2004 up to 4.8 million tons in 2005), decreased by 25 % and by 7 % respectively; volumes of bulk cargo increased by 14 % (from 9.5 million tons in 2004 up to 10.9 million tons in 2005). Coal comprises more than 43 % from the total cargo throughput in the port of Riga, the handling of which increased by 15.2 %, i.e. up to 8.0 million tons.
 
3.35 million tons of cargo was handled in the port of Liepaja during nine months this year, i.e. 1.6 % less than in respective period in 2004 (3.41 million tons). Handling of liquid cargo (by 30.5 %, i.e. 0.5 million tons) and general cargo (by 1 %, i.e. 1.9 million tons) decreased. Handling of bulk cargo increased by 21 % (0.9 million tons) in comparison with the same period in 2004 (0.8 million tons) handling of grain increased by 60 % (from 0.3 million tons in 2004 up to 0.6 million tons in 2005), handling of oil products decreased up to 36 % (from 0.5 million tons in 2004 up to 0.3 million tons in 2005).
 
Nearly 11.0 million tons of cargo was handled in the port of Kaliningrad during nine months this year, of which general and liquid cargo comprise + 14 and + 10 % respectively, more than in the respective period in 2004, bulk – 1.5  million tons, i.e. 9.4 % decrease in comparison with last year. Container throughput increased by 52 % (from 50 282 TEU in 2004 up to 76 350 TEU in 2005); oil products – 11 % increase (from 5.9 million tons in 2004 up to 6.6 million tons in 2005); handling of ferroalloys and metals increased by 37.5 % and by 1 % respectively.
