Cargo turnover in Klaipėda and neighbouring ports during January-October 2006

19,42 million tons of cargo was handled in Klaipėda port during January-October 2006. It is +9, 7 percent more than during the same period in 2005.
According to the types of cargo there increased all of them during January-October this year in Klaipėda port. 6923, 5 thousand tons of liquid cargo (+18, 3 percent more than in 2005), 6047, 0 thousand tons of bulk and dry bulk cargo (+1, 6 percent more than in 2005) and 6445, 9 thousand tons of general cargo (+9, 3 percent more than in 2005) was handled in Klaipėda port.

The fire in AB“Mažeikiu nafta“ (Mažeikiai refinery) in October 12 stopped the growth in cargo turnover because due to it the processing of oil products decreased. Export volumes of this company via Klaipėda port decreased because light petroleum products from oil refinery used to supply first of all Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian markets.
The growing volumes of handling of oil products predetermined the growth of liquid cargo (during first ten months of 2005 there were handled 4, 78 million. tons, during January-October 2006 – 5, 82 million. tons, change +21, 8 percent). In comparison with last year, there increased handling of peat (2, 1 times), bulk fertilizers (+29, 9 percent), scrap metal (+7, 9 percent) as well as handling of ro-ro cargo +29,1 percent (tonnage). There decreased raw sugar –29, 5 percent, timber –23,9 percent, alloys –23, 6 percent, fertilizers in jumbo bags – 22, 6 percent and agricultural products – 21,4 percent handling in Klaipėda port.
There increased the volumes of container handling (TEU) during the last three months and it allowed to exceed by 5,7 percent the total turnover of ten months  in comparison with the last year. 21,1 thousand TEU was handled in October this year and it is the biggest monthly handling in 2006.
The increase of ro-ro units (change + 23,4 percent) was predetermined by the growth of handling of trailers, auto-trailers and trucks in Klaipeda port.

By the arrival of cruise vessel Boudicca in October 7 there was finished the cruise shipping season in Klaipėda port. Though the number of cruise vessel calls decreased in 2006 in the port (change –18, 6 percent, comparing to 2005), but the number of foreign tourists increased (change +3, 8 percent).
During the first ten months the total figure of passengers who came to the port increased by 11, 1 percent and made 212 thousand passengers.

In Saint Petersburg port  during the first ten months of this year there were handled 44,84 million tons of cargo and during the same period of 2005- 48,22 million tons. The biggest growth (+20, 7 percent or 2 152, 1 thousand t) was reached by handling containerized cargo; comparing to the last year there slightly increased cold products and grain (respectively +4, 9 percent and +2, 4 percent). The total flow of containerized cargo, metals and oil products made 64, 2 percent of the total turnover of Saint Petersburg port.
During January-October 2006 there decreased handling of oil products –2 656, 7 thousand t, chemical products –2 011,9 thousand t, coal –902,5 thousand t and timber  –727,7 thousand t , which predetermined the decrease of the total turnover of ten months.  
 
In Tallinn port during the first ten months there were handled 34, 10 million tons of cargo (+4, 9 percent in comparison with the same period of 2005). According to the types of cargo there increased handling of bulk and dry bulk cargo +37,8 percent or 2706 thousand tons, general cargo +12,7 percent or 455 thousand tons and decreased handling of liquid cargo  –7,3 proc. or 1580 thousand tons. The biggest share in the total structure of Tallinn port cargo had liquid cargo, i.e. 59, 2 percent.
During January-October 2006 there is observed the growth of cargo vessel calls in Tallinn port (change +5, 8 percent) and decrease of passenger vessel calls (change –9, 7 percent).
 
During January-October 2006 in Ventspils port there were handled 24, 25 million tons of cargo and during the same period of 2005- 24, 88 million tons. According to the types of cargo there were handled bulk and dry bulk by –20, 9 percent less, 6, 96 million tons of general cargo and it is by 2, 9 times more, 2, 09 million tons of liquid cargo – by 1, 0 percent less or 15, 20 million tons. According to the nomenclature of cargo there was a growth of ro-ro units (+1 231 thousand t), crude oil (+1 193 thousand t) and raw sugar (+87 thousand t) handling. There decreased the main types of transit cargo – oil products and bulk fertilizers– handling by 1 360 thousand t and 1 375 thousand t respectively.
During ten months of this year 115 thousand tons of containerized cargo was handled in Ventspils port (last year 6 thousand t) and 45 thousand passengers (1, 7 times more than in 2005).
 
21, 70 million tons of cargo was handled in Riga port during the first ten months of 2006 and it is by +6, 6 percent more than last year. The biggest part of cargo, more than 13, 35 million tons, made bulk and dry bulk cargo +9, 5 percent or by 1 157, 7 thousand t more than during January-October last year. 18, 7 bulk fertilizers were handled in the port or by –1, 7 percent less than last year. Coal handling increased by +5, 7 percent or 505, 2 thousand t and made 43, 4 percent of the total cargo turnover.
4, 22 million tons of general cargo was handled in Riga port (–20, 3 percent less than during January-October last year). According to nomenclature of general cargo timber made 2 513, 0 thousand t (–23, 9 percent), and 1 344, 0 thousand t of containerized cargo (+2, 4 percent). The volumes of liquid cargo increased by +43, 8 percent during January-October this year, in comparison with the last year and made 4, 12 million t, including 4, 07 million t of oil products (+49, 0 percent).
During ten months of this year 217, 0 thousand passengers were served in Riga port (change +14, 6 percent), including 78, 2 thousand passengers who came by cruise vessels.
 
3, 33 million tons of cargo was handled in Liepaja port during January-October 2006 and it is by –11, 8 percent less than during the same period last year. 831, 4 thousand tons of liquid cargo or by +48, 1 percent more than during the same period last year, 1 308, 9 thousand tons of bulk and dry bulk cargo (growth +8, 4 percent) was handled in the port. The growth of this type of cargo was predetermined by the growth of agricultural products, scrap metals and oil products handling.
General cargo decreased from 2 006, 1 thousand t in 2005 to 1 188, 7 thousand t in 2006 (change – 40, 7percent), and it predetermined the decrease in total cargo turnover in Liepaja port. According to the nomenclature of cargo there was a decrease in handling ro-ro units (–468, 3 thousand t), timber (–183, 1 thousand t) and black metals (–121, 2 thousand t).
