Cargo handling in Klaipėda and neighbouring in January - July of 2009

In January - July of 2009 Klaipėda Port handled 15,38 million tons of marine cargo, i.e. by -15,7 % or by 2,86 million tons less than in corresponding  period of 2008.
The turnover of all types of cargo (liquid, dry and bulk, general).reduced in Klaipėda port during the period seven months of this year.

Decrease of liquid cargo handling has been still affected by still reducing main liquid cargo flows: oil products – by 5,8 percent (5,48 million tons were handled in January – July in 2009 and 5,82 million. tons in January – July in 2008, i.e. the change makes 436,2 thousand tons) and liquid fertilizers – by 31,1 percent (588,4 thousand tons in January – July in 2009 and 853,6 thousand tons in January – July in 2008, i.e. the change is 265,1 thousand tons).
The growth tendency in dry cargo turnover has been observed in handling of agriculture products (+ 241,9 thousand tons, 918,5 thousand tons were handled, change +35,7 percent), peat handling (+121,5 thousand tons, 198,6 thousand tons were handled , change +2,6 times), mining products and construction materials (+41,7 thousand tons, 480,0 thousand tons were handled, change +9,5 percent). During the first seven months of this year the biggest drop was recorded in handling of bulk fertilizers (-960,6 thousand tons, 2,82 million tons were handled, change -25,4 percent.), metal scrap (-244,8 thousand tons, 121,4 thousand tons were handled, change -66,8 percent.) and ferroalloys (-168,2 thousand tons, 130,7 thousand tons were handled, change -56,3 percent) if to compare with a corresponding period of 2008.
In terms of general cargo nomenclature only the growth of packed fertilizers was recorded (+19,4 thousand tons, 224,3 thousand tons were handled, change +9,5 percent) in January – July of this year. The biggest drop in handling figures was recorded for containers (in terms of tonnage) (-513,9 thousand tons, 1,57 million tons were handled, change – 27,7 percent), Ro-Ro cargo (in terms of tonnage) (-359,7 thousand tons, 1,77 million tons were handled, change -16,9 percent), timber (-240,1 thousand tons, 205,0 thousand tons were handled, change -54,1 percent) and iron and steel ware (-76,1 thousand tons, 215,5 thousand tons were handled, change -26,1 percent) and handling of refrigerated products (-52,9 thousand tons, 157,4 thousand tons were handled, change -25,2 percent).
In January – July of 2009 the turnover of container units (TEU) in the port was less by -32,5 percent than during the corresponding period of 2008 (in January – July of 2009 144 361 TEU was handled, change – 69 363 TEU). Handling of Ro-Ro units decreased by -20,3 percent (98 249 TEU was handled in January-July of 2009, change – 25 447 units)
During the seven months of the year 160,3 thousand passengers visited Klaipėda, i.e. more by 2,5 percent than in January – July of 2008. During three months of cruise season of 2009 21,6 thousand cruise passengers visited Klaipėda, i.e. more by 30 percent comparing with the corresponding period of the last year, then the number of passengers was 16,7 thousand.
Cargo handling at Būtingės terminal in January – July of 2009 comparing with the corresponding period of the last year reduced by -4,7 percent and made 4,9 million tons.

Cargo handling rate in the Joint Port of Tallinn was 18,17 million tons (change +6,3 percent comparing to January – July of 2008). According to cargo type the turnover of dry and bulk cargo dropped down by -0,9 percent or – 19,0 thousand tons, general cargo by -24,9 percent or -733,1 thousand tons and liquid gas handling increased by +15,8 percent or +1,88 million tons. Liquid cargo constituted the biggest part in general cargo structure of Tallin port. (75,8 percent).
1511 cargo vessels called - in Tallinn Port in January – July in 2009, i.e. more by 112 vessels comparing with a corresponding period of 2008.
4,32 million passengers visited Tallinn Port this year , i.e. passenger flow was the same as in January – July of 2008.
In January- July Ryga Seaport handled 17,22 million tons of cargo, i.e., more by +1,3 percent if to compare with the corresponding period of 2008. Due to growing handling of oil products (+29,5 percent), bulk fertilizers (+2,4 percent) and coal (+11,3 percent) cargo handling in Ryga Port is increasing.
The turnover of dry and bulk cargo in January – July of 2009 in Ryga Seaport made 11,15 million tons, i.e., +36,6 thousand tons more than in January-July of 2008. Analysis of dry and bulk cargo nomenclature showed that the highest growth rate was recorded in coal handling, 8,61 million tons or +11,3 percent more than in January – July of 2008 (7,74 million tons). The handling of dry fertilizers reached 1,18 million tons, i.e. more by +2,4 percent than in January – July of 2008 when the handling of dry fertilizers was 1,15 million tons. Coal handling constituted 50,0 percent of total cargo handling turnover in Ryga Port.
Liquid cargo turnover in the Port of Latvia during seven month increased by+28,5 percent and reached up to 3,86 million tons. Oil product handling, that constitutes 99,5 percent of total liquid cargo turnover, increased by +29,5 percent, 3,85 million tons of cargo were handled.
General cargo turnover in Riga Seaport decreased in January – July of 2009, their handling rate reached up to 2,21 million tons (-24,3 percent as to compare with January – July of 2008). In terms of general cargo nomenclature container handling made 992,8 thousand tons (-10,3 percent) and timber handling made 823,3 thousand tons (-37,5 percent). Ro – Ro cargo handling in January – July of 2009 was 334,5 thousand tons, i.e. less by -9,8 percent than during the corresponding period of 2008.
404,6 thousand passengers visited Ryga Port in January – July of 2009 and the number of passengers during the corresponding period of 2008 was 257,4 thousand (change +57,2 percent). The number of cruise passenger in the season of 2009 increased by 67,4 percent up to 87,4 thousand passengers, i.e. more than 35,2 thousand cruise tourists visited Ryga port if to compare with the corresponding period of 2008.
During the seven months of this year 17,18 million tons of cargo were handled in Ventspils Port ( 17,36 million tons during January – July of 2008, change -1,4 percent). Liquid cargo handling in Ventspils Port increased by+5,5 percent, 11,93 million tons were handled, dry and bulk cargo handling dropped down -6,6 percent, the turnover of this cargo reached up to 4,44 million tons, and general cargo handling decreased by -37,8 percent, 804 thousand tons were handled comparing with January-July of 2008.
In terms of cargo nomenclature the highest growth rate in January - July of 2009 was recorded in oil product handling +1,43 million tons (11,02 million tons were handled in January – July of 2009, change +14,9 percent) and coal handling +715 thousand tons (3,36 million tons were handled in January – July of 2009, change +27,0 percent). Handling of fertilizers -852 thousand tons (477 thousand tons were handled in January- July of 2009, change -64,1 percent), crude oil 460,0 thousand tons (454,0 thousand tons were handled in January – July of 2009, change -48,6 percent, ammonia – 355 thousand tons (376 thousand tons were handled in January – July of 2009, change -48,6 percent), Ro-Ro cargo – 349 thousand tons (481,0 thousand tons were handled in January – July of 2009, change -42,0) has been still decreasing in Ventspils Port.
The number of passengers in neighbouring port decreased by 12 370 passengers in January – July of 2009 and reached scarcely 8478 passengers, i.e. – by – 59,3 percent less than it was in January – July of 2008. During seven month of the year Ventspils Port rendered services to 1 097 vessels ( 192 vessels less than during the corresponding period of 2008).
2,41 million tons of cargo (-5,6 percent less than in January – July of 2008) were handled in Liepoja Port in January – July of 2009. In terms of cargo type the volume of dry and bulk increased by +10,5 percent (1,14 million tons were handled in January – July of 2009), liquid cargo handling dropped down by -42,5 percent ( 345,4 thousand tons were handled in January- July of 2009) and general cargo handling remained at the level of January – July of 2008 ( 930,6 thousand tons were handled in January – July of 2009).
Results of main cargo handling in Liepoja Port in January – July of 2009 were as follows: grain -35,7 percent ( 996,7 thousand tons were handled, change +262,2 thousand tons), oil product – 56,8 percent (157,8 thousand tons were handled, change – 207,3 thousand tons), metal -3,1 percent ( 314,8 thousand tons were handled, change – 10,0 thousand tons), timber -16,7 percent (236,8 thousand tons were handled, change – 47,5 thousand tons) less if to compare with the corresponding period of 2008.
Notwithstanding the fact that cargo handling results of the I half of the year in Klaip4da Port are not impressive ( handling – 13,0 million tons, change – 18 percent if to compare with the I half of 2008), it is global the economic recession tendency characteristic to the majority of European Ports.
Analysis of activity results of main foreign partners of Klaipeda Port demonstrates the same changes.
Handling rate in German Bremen Ports in the I half of the year scarcely reached 29,14 million tons, i.e. less by -22,1 percent than in January – June of 2008 ( 37,41 million tons). Container handling in these ports significantly decreased as well –20,5 percent, 2,15 million TEU were handled in January – June o 2009, meanwhile during the corresponding period it was 2,71 million TEU.
Handling results of Antwerp Port of the I half of 2009 were less by 19,9 percent than during the I half of 2008. This Belgian Port in January – June of 2009 handled 77,06 million tons of cargo and their turnover in January – June of 2008 reached up to 96,24 million tons. The turnover of container units (TEU) during the analysed period decreased by - 18,5 percent, from 4,43 million TEU in the I half of 2008 up to 3,62 million TEU in the I half of 2009.
185,25 million tons of sea cargo were handled in Rotterdam Port in the I half of this year, i.e. the handling rate in the Port decreased by 13,4 percent (213,97 million tons were handled in January – June of 2008). Container turnover, constituting over the quarter of the total handling in this Dutch Port, dropped down from 5,42 million TEU handled in the I half of 2008 to 4,61 million TEU handled in the I half of this year ( change – 15,1 percent)
In January – June of this year Copenhagen Port handled 2,86 million tons of cargo, i.e. cargo handling of the I half of 2009 decreased by 18,2 percent if to compare with cargo handling rate of the corresponding period (3,50 million tons). The turnover of container units was decreasing further – in the I half of 2009 61 990 TEU were handled and in the I half of 2008 – 79 276 TEU, change -21,8 percent.
